Busk Ye, My Bonnie Bride. D. Ray McClellan, David Fung
Dear Propective Student:
Please allow me to welcome you to UGA. I'm glad that you found your way to this website and that you are interested in becoming a part of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music. The HHSOM has been my musical home for the last 15 years. With its national standing as one of the finest schools of its kind, its preeminence as the state's comprensive school of music and its world-class faculty, I find it to be a wonderful place to thrive and grow as a musician.
I first became acquainted with the HHSOM School of Music when I was a student at Juilliard. My room-mate had just received his Bachelor's degree from UGA. I wondered why he pronounced the word dog in a funny way and seemed proud when doing so. That was many years ago, and since that time the School of Music has grown exponentially. A clear priority for the University, the School of Music was given new state of the art facilities and an impressive addition of new faculty lines and world-class hires that have continued to this day.
The clarinet studio has established itself as among the finest in the United States through the successes of the students at international competitions, national job auditions and graduate school auditions. There is a healthy balance of competition and camaraderie within the studio and a sense of pride for being one of the best studios in the school. Feel free to contact any of the members of the clarinet studio for an insider's view. I'm happy to supply you with names and email address of my students.
The Hugh Hodgson School of Music is home to approximately 300 undergraduates and 200 graduate students and is housed in a magnificent state of the art facility. The ensembles are strong and under excellent leadership. There are plenty of practice rooms and hundreds of performances to attended, including world class faculty recitals, chamber music concerts and traveling orchestras presented in the wonderful Performing Arts Center.
The University of Georgia is consistently rated by U.S. News and World Report as a top 20 Public University as well as on Kiplingers list of Great Schools at a Great Price. The beautiful campus is next to what is often identified in the press as one of the greatest college towns in the United States, Athens, GA. We are host to many NCAA athletic events and are in close proximity to Atlanta.
I want to urge you to apply early, both to UGA and to the HHSOM. The links to both online applications are below for your convenience.
I know that applying to universities and schools of music can be a daunting process. Please feel free to email me if I can be of help to you.
Sincerely,
D. Ray McClellan
Professor of Clarinet
